Daydreams
Tiny-boned sonar fliers,
feet centimeters apart,
practice long swooping
dives in their heads
capes accordioned
at their sides.
At night, they shake out
leather wings, launch
themselves from rafters,
belfries, cupolas,
seeking out congregations
of moths, places of
illumination, performing
aerial crossovers
and breathtaking mid-air
stops to slam into
bugs who bounce, stunned,
into the rictuses
of tiny, pink-tongued mouths.
Lost to light,
they fly back chittering
companionably
with ultrasonic
high-pitched shrieks
to rafters, belfries,
barns warmed
by domestic stock,
to daydreams
