My Daughter's Birthday 1966 (Tr. by David Stivender and J. D. McClatchy)
CITTA DALLALTO
divisa in quadrati (puoi contarli) e dolce
come un catino . .
romano
grigia ellisse quieta dove
dormono o si trascinano enormi, obesi, ingrassati
come capponi, rimpinzati a volonta
CITY FROM ABOVE
These streets that climb to the walls
have no horizon, see: they knock against the sky
white and clear, treeless, like a stream that turns. From here
to the processions
of somebodies and dogs
that carry leashes, placards
holding up the tail-end,
there would be ninety paces, a hundred, no more: further down,
however, in the lower city
divided into quarters (you can count them) and comforting
as a washtub . . . and a little farther on
the cathedral, with its five orders one above the other; and
continuing on
to the right, diagonally, for another
thirty or forty paces-a short distance: continue to read
as if from a map-you'll hit right upon the axis of the square
built on the rocky foundations of the Roman
circus,
a quiet grey ellipse where,
sleeping or dragging themselves along, enormous, obese,
fattened
like capons, eagerly gorged
with meat and burgundy so they won't leave the square-the
poor
of the city. Halfway between the focal points
there, in four hundred years,
they will be setting up the guillotine.
