Spofford Hall

It might be a university. They took the money
From my college fund. We even have homework.
I had to write my
Obituary, and scream at a chair.
It gets easy
Once you say there is a God. They give
Your hairspray back.
My roommate is a rich grandma
Who plays piano and hid
Vodka in the loo. My counselor has
A record in six countries, and thinks
Billie Holiday's a man.
We have meditation,
Gym class, group. I've been called
"Whore" eleven times. Now a talk on self-esteem. I nap
Under the bed or in the bath. They make me
Wear my T-shirts inside out.
Today is
Visiting day. Matt doesn't come, of course. Mom
Brings bagels and a rabbit
With a red felt tongue. Dad tries to execute
A hug.
There's not enough room for us all.
If the spread is creased, I get
A sad face on my door. It's far too hot.
Old resentments pop like corn.
Naturally we talk about
My weight gain and the view. Patients circle
In pairs. Someone fishing
Hooks a pair of jeans.
