The Quiet Life

Tired of hanging
Around in himself,
He went out
Into other people.
At length familiar and
Occupying a place in their lives
Like the park one cuts through
On the way to work,
He was the sign
Awaiting the painter
That all day for weeks
Does not say Buy or Enter.
All night he is the tree
That falls and falls
In the famous dark
And philosophical forest.
