Unknown, so Unnamed

From ''Three Portraits"
She had a body
That
You couldn't take away from her,
And that laggard smile of the lost.
Ah, she was so tired of being
So tired of everything,
We could only languish
In suggestions that were impossible . . .
New York, New York, New York.
ELLIOTT CARTER
Lost in the chaos of this shattered forest-
slivers of trees, bomb wounds, vague screams-
I lie down in a clatter of broken things
with a woman all elbows, ankles, and knees.
The claws of her ribs are clutching her,
the delicate antlers of her collar-bone
are poised for flight.
