Thinking of K.H.S.

All loss brings us to character.
Real loss implies some dear
Distinct mind and figure; thus to recall
Nervous, kind, clear
Vignettes is as important as it is moving.
But when we should have begun
To see life standing with death white at its shoulder
And have realized that this living
Woman should have been welcomed face
To face, I cannot now
Say. Our lives were rivercraft which turned
Up different streams to lose
Touch. Then in our humdrum health
We looked toward old affection:
Only to be brought up short by the unyielding
Grey sentence of your death.
