On Not Deserving
Worry hedges my days
Like a roil of thick mist at the edge of a covert
Fringing a tufted meadow. In that field
Monuments of art and sanctity
Arise in turn before
The clouded glass of my eye.
Last year the two churches of St. Francis
Were piled up there, at the lowest verge of Assisi.
