The Apple

Broken from the bursting bough
And bitten, they who searched it saw
The secret knowledge of their need,
Change at the core, the biding seed.
Diminished branch and ravished fruit
Forever troubling leaf and root.
Then legend placed a flaming sword
That none again might Edenward
Find in the shade of such a tree
The innocence of childhood's eye.
