The Narrow Room

What is momentary and what is
stone
meet in this house
we have hollowed with our breath,
and beamed with bone.
What is hand-near
and what is star
furnish this enclosure
where we move,
with the future accessible as sky,
and death hand-far.
More than flesh, more than mind
couple in this narrow room,
roofed by angel wings, paced by clocks.
Plain to us both is the finger-rabbit on the wall,
and we are quickened
by paradox.
