Theagony

White birds with their
Bright satan wings
Watch where I stand
Alone on a dead end jetty of dead sand,
Watch, wait, wish a ferry
To my fairyland.
But in between doubt crests on doubt cross-christ
In all those barren bounds of salt unrest
Fish the supreme life.

At stepman depth writhes loathly and dimsensed,
Yet quick, fine, firm, fin sinuous, slight man.
But at the bottom of the steep, for an abacus,
The saint swims phosphorescently,
Devouring the forgiveness of himself.
Hence here I stand with nothing for my feet
But thinnest delicacy of
Love on a fine day,
With nothing for my faith
But a wisp of my love's hair between my teeth.
Hence here I dare not tread
Over the marish of the dead
Must watch, wait, wish for wings to fly
At least my tongue into the sky.
Oh ferry wings, my love's so far away,
And a dark night hungers to surmount the day.
Oh Ferdinand alas! What strange fish
Make now their meal on what strange fish
Close to the surface.
Does then Icarus still die, dies yet,
Is he still dying? Oh Icarus,
We sin when we forget
Were we not wax to melt God could not print
His kiss on us.
Yet faith, had you had faith enough
When your wings fell
You would have fallen
Upward to sunburial.
