Walking at Night Two Years Later
The quality of darkness is defense:
I walk with armored heart along the lane,
One hand upraised to ward the spider skein
Of starlight from the nakedness of sense.
The quality of darkness is pretense:
The thought is stopped, while memories regain
A stiff excitement. Down a path in Maine
The distant quality of dark is dense.
Though reason chirps that this is peace, that love
Has swept us on together from the dark
Of isolated dangers, still the blind
Gray loom of night is menace. White above
The web of captured safety breaks a spark
From cold colliding rockets of the mind.
