A Large Silence

three poems
A LARGE SILENCE
god must have a large ear
to hear
the green-bird and zither-song
and all little children
playing
god must have a large eye
to measure
the size of pain
and yet give a speck of his eye
to every child
god must have a large hand
to carve in watery waste
and blades of grass
a radiant world
god must have a large silence
in his house
to recognize a maelstrom of blood
and say nothing.
