Work Chant

The one-a-penny day
Gets up in a spill of coins,
The dreamer's gilded lid
Rolls back to find
The enemy not really slain.
The crown and the nightmare queen
Are pawned
And all nocturnal strangeness
That breeds content.
Early traffic
Shudders on the back
Of the two-a-penny day
And 'deary' girls
Embark on cellophane journeys
And the world accepts the charges.
But somewhere, somewhere,
A sheening sea, the horsy field, a
Milk and clover duchy parades
Its regal cow.
But somewhere, somewhere, the suicide
Will rise at length, put on his hat
And turn to greet the weather.
And somewhere
At the instant of horizon
The seas will drink their ships.
