Winter Feeding
St. Francis crumbs we toss to the birds
On the glacier snow outside the window,
Clucking our love with little words
For defeated sparrows who challenge in row
For the lucky bread, the suet crumbs
(In the name of Christ and Rockefeller)
We toss like pennies from lighted rooms
To keep the beggars from the cellar.
