Chains of Filigree

Beyond the mountains lie
The lands for which I seek,
[ 238 ]
Land I shall never find
Until the day I die.
There in a classic calm
She lifts her golden brow
Whose placid rivers flow
As softly as a psalm.
A brooding afternoon
Of summer, ripe and warm,
Secure from shade and storm,
Or the soft-breathing moon.
Achieved and unattained,
This vision without fear,
All hopes my soul contained
Fulfilled, are gathered here.
Beneath a deathless tree,
Beneath an unchanging sun,
In chains of filigree
Is life undone.
