To His Soul

REFLECTIONS
TO HIS SOUL
Soul, fellow of a life accurst,
Dearer to me than any friend,
I have beset you from the first
And I shall seek you to the end.
It does not matter what you are,
How strong to burn, how weak to yield:
The hovel's candle, or the star
That shines upon the battlefield:
Soul, we are older than the sun-
Apart, and infinitely one.
