"Broncho" Gallock
A football coach has taught this human flesh
The fluid speech of organ-fugues by Bach.
As a fleet melody slips through a mesh
Of other notes, avoiding any shock
With tunes that run and interlace, just so
This boy can lightly weave among his mates,
And leaping, bowing, swaying, swerving, go
Racing to goal with rhythm of the fates.
But his mind stumbles into Shakespeare class
Pompously posturing, uncouthily funny;
He labels Furnivall an awful ass,
And cites as greatest of the critics, Tunney.
He seeks this goal, and thinks that he comes near it:
"An equal growth of body, mind and spirit."
