Last Double
Frances Fennings
LAST DOUBLE
Everything doubles under:
Waves, and the cowl of thunder
That cloaking a scowl turns to double
Back on the black of its trouble,
And doubling rolls to fresh cover.
All rolling is doubling over
Or under, two doubles revolved;
Except on the flight unsolved
When the flesh, like a cast-off rubble
Or frail torn mesh, takes last double
To ground, an unprofound toll
For the mirthless escape of a soul-
While the earth continues to roll.
