I Taught Three Babes

Over the earthly borderland
A pilgrim came at even,
And sought with other souls
A passport on to Heaven.
She was so meek, clad all in gray,
And timid in her mien,
The Guardians caught her turning back,
Not wanting to be seen.
The Questioner of Souls began-
What did you in yon world of pain?
Soberly this soul replied,
"T taught three babes to love the rain."
There fell a pause-again he spoke,
"Where are your toil-marks and your scars?"
She searched her cool gray robes, then pled,
"I taught three babes to know the stars."
Once more the Questioner essayed
"But did you weep for sin and wrong?"
She shook her head and smiled, and said,
"T taught three babes a little song."
