The Engineers

Across the fields and deserts,
And coupling town with town,
The white tracks stretch out parallel
With engines charging down.
Elizabeth F. Coatsworth
There freight and beasts and passengers
In their degree may ride,
And hoboes follow vagrant gods,
Modestly unespied.
And hero engineers lean out-
Those riders absolute-
To raise their hands to villages
In casual salute.
