Sonnet 5

I am a little world made cunningly
Of elements, 0 and an angelike sprite; 0matter I spirit
But black sin hath betrayed to endless night
My world's both parts, and O, both parts must die.
You which beyond that heaven which was most high
Have found new spheres, and of new lands can write, 1
Pour new seas in mine eyes, that so I might
Drown my world with my weeping earnestly,
O r w a s h i t i f i t m u s t b e d r o w n e d n o m o r e . 2
But O, it must be burntP Alas, the fire
O f lust a n d envy'have b u r n t i t h e r e t o f o r e ,

A n d m a d e it fouler; let their f l a m e s retire,
A n d b u r n m e , O Lord, w i t h a fiery zeal
O f t h e e ' a n d thy h o u s e , w h i c h d o t h i n e a t i n g h e a l . 4
