Psalm 114 (Isaac Watts)

Miracles AttendingIsrael's Journey
W h e n Isr'el, freed f r o m Pharaoh's hand,
Left the proud tyrant and his land,3
T h e tribes with cheerful h o m a g e ownacknowledge
Their king; and J u d a h was his throne.4

Across the deep their journey lay;
The deep 0 divides to make them way.Red Sea
J o r d a n 5 beheld their march, and led,
With backward current, to his head.

T h e m o u n t a i n s shook like frighted sheep,
Like lambs the little hillocks leap;

Not Sinai6 on her base could stand,
C o n s c i o u s of sov'reign pow'r at hand.

W h a t pow'r could m a k e the deep divide
M a k e J o r d a n backward roll his tide
Why did ye leap, ye little hills
And whence the fright that Sinai feels

Let ev'ry mountain, ev'ry flood,
Retire and know th' approaching G o d ,
T h e King of Isr'el: see him here!
Tremble , thou earth, adore an d fear.

He thunders, and all nature m o u r n s ;
T h e rock to standing pools he turns,
Flints spring with fountains at his word,
A n d fires and seas c o n f e s s the Lord.
