Suburb

Are the rats little
Buddhas? Poisoned by the old
lady upstairs they
do not know it yet. And look
with their usual
cynical sweetness at us
from the kitchen floor.
Their tails still brush our shoji
at night. They still play.
They get used to everything.
The style of dying. Of us.
