1965

Here, in the thick Carolina darkness,
I hear the bombers rumbling from Fort Bragg.

Three hundred miles north of here,
in the air stinking with mist off the Potomac,

the President hunches on the White House lawn.
His dogs are with him, and he is weary.

They sniff and nuzzle his rough hunter's hands.
