Green Apple: Still Life II

SAUL TOUSTER

GREEN APPLE: STILL LIFE I

A thing such as this is
 can't contain more of itself
 than its seed can

 and yet by late afternoon
 something else, something entirely other
 than the green apple
 joins it on the table
 and gives it support.

 Maybe it's the blue background
darkening or a gesture that favors
 roundness over weight.
 Still, it's the right weight
 in the hand, and cold,
 and sets the teeth
 on edge.

GREEN APPLE: STILL LIFE I

 Green grows the apple
 in the real blue air
 blowing the air
 from the apple's sheen
 holding together
 even the stem
 the lemons in the distance.

As if the stillness weren't enough.

 Green grows the core
and the shadow of the core
wearing the shape of an apple.
