PORTRY

                            PAESAGGIO
                          a Robert Penn Warren

Le giovinette con le gonne di fragola
                   mormorano allacciate lungo il mare.
                   L'acqua lentamente s'arrossa
                   al largo, alle correnti.
                   Galleggia un paese di sughero
                   sulla scia del sole.
                                 S'alzerä
                   il vento, il mare inghiottira
                   la sua ostia d'oro, resterä
acceso e pallido nella lunga sera
                   coronato di fulgide catene
                   di barche timorose.
                                  Sulla sabbia
                   gli ombrelloni richiusi sveleranno
                   glinnamorati e
                   come sulla cenere
                   d'un grande fald
                   bambini scalzi andranno gridando.

                   Beviamo lentamente il vino
                   di Sicilia odoroso
                   di magnolie e ananas.
                   Una calma
                   tristezza ci assicura
che la bellezza & senza inganno.

           SEASCAPE
        to Robert Penn Warren

Young girls in strawberry skirts
whisper intertwined at the sea's edge.
The water slowly reddens
offshore, in the drift of the currents.
A city of cork floats
in the wake of the sun.
                  The wind
will rise, the sea will swallow
its golden Host-remain
luminous and pale through the long evening
crowned with twinkling chains
of timorous boats.
              On the sand
the folded sun-shades give up
their lovers and
as over the ashes
of a great bonfire
children run barefoot, shouting.

Slowly we drink the wine
of Sicily, smelling
of magnolias and pineapple.
Acalm
sadness assures us
in beauty there is no deception.
