A Stone's Throw

A stone's throw.and another down the old shaft
as a child, lighter quarry with the clouds,
chased images of silver, did-a trif-
ling toss to bottom of the sad

depth and ringing the unanswered bell
of water along the gray-rose ways of shale.

But to the heavier return she will appear
with cavernous intuition-in no tale the mine-
maiden makes herself real, impressing
with diamond insight: into this day of sun
which pillaging its woodland passage had
a fire in leafy pools to black the bed.

Her reach is obscene, to fell you, and the light
of surprise shines on the looping blue-
racer in rushing leaves, the flight outlying clear:
as later, evening releasing the wan power
to go back and catch the bat, her. beauty's mark,
men long gone as her goods for nights of work.
                                      Mites WHITE
