The Blood of the Lamb

The damp wool of the ewe protects the lamb
Which nurses on her lee side in the storm,
The urgent head pressed sharply to its dam
Escapes the winter and explains the norm
Of metabolic process gressed in time,
The balanced heat and cold, the mean of law,
The principle of motion in the lime,
Once ewe and lamb crouched numbly in a draw.

Mother to mother yields, the snow returns:
So each the other, absolute in change;
The surge of seasons and the swell of birth
Give meaning to a lamb upon the range,
Nudging the rank wool as the udder churns
The causal liquid which repairs the earth.
