Complaint

I could have lived content in a snail's shell.
What tore me forth and furnished me with wings,
And set me here with other tortured things,
Beating a painful way to Heaven or Hell?
Why could I not be left to creep and die?
I watch my wings with vague reproachful eye-
   I never wished to fly.
